Recreation

In addition to working hard at fund raising, PWC (Palatine Women's Club) members also enjoy each other's company as they participate in a variety of hobbies.

Bowling

  • Begins the 1st Wednesday after Labor Day and runs through the 1st Wednesday in May.
  • The first "ball" is at 9:15 am at Beverly Lanes in Arlington Heights.
  • Social Bowling.  No set teams.  No team competition.  Bowling for fun only.  Handicaps are computed based upon submitted scores.
  • Cost is approximately $12 per week.  Since there are no set teams, come when you can.  You only pay for the weeks that you bowl.
  • Participants often go out for lunch after bowling.
  • A year end banquet is held -- and prizes are awarded.

Bridge

  • Meets the 4th Tuesday of the month from September through May.
  • The group is comprised of 8 members plus substitutes.
  • Each player rotates tables after 6 hands of bridge.
  • Individual points are recorded throughout the evening.
  • Play is friendly and filled with conversation.
  • Cost is $2 per evening.
  • All participants (members plus substitutes) receive awards.

Golf

  • Play generally begins Mid-May and continues as long as the weather cooperates.
  • Open to anyone who happens to have that Thursday morning free.
  • Play is at Twin Lakes golf course in Palatine.
  • Based upon that week's participation, a sufficient number of tee times are reserved.
  • Play generally starts at 8:00 am.
  • Standard Greens Fees apply (based upon Salt Creek Park District residency).  Riding carts are available for an additional fee.
  • Scores are not formally kept.
  • Come out and enjoy a friendly round filled with lively banter followed by an early lunch!

Movie Matinee

Our monthly movie matinee will be on the fourth Wednesday of each month followed by an early dinner.  Information about the theater, movie and restaurant will be e-mailed a few days before the event.  If you don't have email, please call our recreation co-chairman, Catherine.  You'll find her number in your club directory.  Look forward to seeing you all then!!!!

If you like the idea of participating this social outing and making new friends, c'mon and  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Tennis

  • Feel like hitting a few balls on Wednesday mornings?  Then bring your racket and tennis balls to Morris Park in Palatine.
  • Play begins in mid-April and continues as long as the weather permits.
  • If you can hold a tennis racket and occasionally hit the ball -- then this Social Doubles group is for you!
  • Play starts at 8:00 am.
  • Players rotate in and out based upon the number of available people.

Three-Week Book Club

  • Do you like to read?  Tired of having to hunt for new, interesting books?  Did you hate having to do Book Reports in School?  Then this group is for you!
  • The Book Club participants meet in August to select titles.  Each person brings a list of books that they are interested in reading.  The group discusses the list and makes a recommendation from that person's list.  The result is that each Book Club participant has a "selected book" for the year.  So, if there are 12 participants, 12 books are selected.
  • The Book Club chairperson then purchases one copy of each of the selected books.  The total cost is divided equally among all Book Club participants.
  • The Book Club chairperson includes a list of all participants inside the cover of each book.  The books are then distributed to the Book Club participants at the September meeting.  Each person begins reading their selected book.
  • At the end of three weeks, each person is expected to pass their book to the next person on the list.  They will receive a different book in return.  At the end of the year, everyone in the Book Club will have read each of the selected books.
  • In addition to the "Book Selection" meeting in August, the participants will meet one other time during the year to discuss a "Group Book".  Each participant is expected to locate and read the "Group Book" in time for the discussion.
  • Due to organizational necessity, PWC members must join the Book Club prior to September 1st each year in order to participate.

Have another Recreation Idea?

  • Make a suggestion to the Palatine Women's Club and start organizing your group.
  • Unlike formal committees, each Recreational Group is lead by an interested PWC member.  The Group Lead is responsible for all Recreational arrangements (such as reservations for bowling and golf).
  • Participation will be open to all Palatine Women's Club members -- and is voluntary.
